Simhasana
What is Simhasana?
Simhasana also known as Lion's Pose is usually performed in various styles of yoga, mainly in hatha yoga. Simha means Lion and asana means pose. Its name mainly derives from the functioning of the asana displaying the majesty and prowess of the lion.
Technique:
1. Sit in lotus pose and then stand on both of your knees keeping the bottom left toe underneath the right thigh pressing the perineum. In women, It will press the vagina.
2. Similarly, keeeping the knees apart place the bottom right toe underneath the left thigh pressing the perineum.
3. Now, place both of your palms in front of your knees.
4. Bend your head backward looking at the sky or roof performing shambhavi mudra(concentrating your eyes on the nose tip).
5. Now pull out your tongue and roar like a lion, while performing this asana you don't need to concentrate on your breath, you just need to keep in mind while roaring the breath performs naturally with it.
Benefits:
1. Reduces the appearance of facial tension: Simhasana relieves facial tension since it reduces the appearance of facial tension, and also reduces fine lines and the appearance of wrinkles.
2. Gives relief from stress: Performing simhasana can help you relieve stress, tension, or anxiety.
3. Improves Throat Health: Practicing simhasana regularly can prove beneficial for individuals who are public speakers or singers, as it helps in improving throat health.
4. Cures Stammering: This asana will cure any kind of throat as well as tongue issues such as stammering. It is therapeutic for stammering.
5. Stimulates Digestion: Stretching out of the tongue stimulates the facial muscles which in turn, accelerates your abdominal regions thus improving digestion.
6. Strengthening: It strengthens your throat, facial muscles, and voice.
Note:
1. For pregnant women, it's better to consult a yoga instructor or a healthcare professional before performing this asana.
2. Avoid practicing this pose if you are having neck pain or suffering from any kind of neck or throat injury
Conclusion:
Simhasana will prove more beneficial if performed in front of the sun. Regular practice will give longevity and health. Before performing simhasana practice a few simple exercises or "sukshma vyayam".
